Swedish Weight Sounding (SWS)

The Geotechnical Laboratory has a KS-0310 Swedish Weight Sounding (SWS) device manufactured by Tesco Inc., Japan. Similar to the Sower’s DCP, the SWS is a portable penetrometer for characterizing soil profiles to depths up to 10m. The SWS tests are widely used in Japan and New Zealand for both foundation and liquefaction evaluations. The KS-0310 is a manual SWS and consists of 1 handle, 1 weight collar, 1 screw point, 15 1-m rods, and 100 kg dead weights.
